Urban Communications Inc. is an independent, CRTC registered non-dominant telecommunications carrier, delivering broadband services and network connectivity on a private metropolitan area fibre optic network strategically located in high-density corridors of Vancouver and Victoria, British Columbia.

The demand for Internet access continues to grow, with users demanding greater speed, which is represented by bandwidth capacity. Optical fibre has the capability of carrying hundreds or thousands times more data than current forms of “broadband”, such as DSL or cable. Urban’s optical fibre network enables advanced communication technologies, capable of carrying multiple data streams and applications, including multiple channels of high definition television, telephone and Internet data transmissions.

Urban has constructed a 185 km. state-of-the-art fibre optic network which passes through 80% of the high density corridors in the greater Vancouver and Victoria areas, which is continuously being extended as new opportunities arise. The network design offers ringed redundancy and independence from many of the technical and competitive limitations of the regulated incumbents’ networks. Redundancy is important to maintain service in the event of a network disruption, particularly for commercial customers who pay for superior service levels.

Urban has been providing service to federal, provincial and municipal governments, 911 emergency services, universities, hospitals and other telecommunications carriers since 2001. Urban’s competitive advantages are security, scalability and reliability, together with competitive pricing, and the ability to initiate and continue to provide service on its independent network to a customer's premises.

Urban Networks Inc.

Urban Networks Inc. is an Internet Service Provider (ISP) that provides high bandwidth Internet, data transfer, voice and video services directly to the building (whether residential or business). The Urban metro Ethernet solution:

• bypasses “local loop” connectivity issues and reduces monthly costs
• reduces the access bandwidth bottleneck
• reduces the complexity of its infrastructures by running voice, data and video across the same network – right to individual buildings and customers
• creates a fibre-based offer to the small and medium enterprise business segments
• delivers bandwidth and Internet transit at a cheaper price per Mbps/month
• moves away from pure connectivity to higher value services such as video streaming and multimedia content delivery

Urban’s technology platform is based on industry standard components and is scalable to provide the advanced IP services to any buildings connected to Urban’s network operations centre. Urban Networks’ operational advantages over service providers who are leasing access to infrastructure owned by incumbent telephone and cable companies is lower cost, plus for subscribers on the Urban fibre net, the delivery of synchronous bandwidth speeds for both uploads and downloads. High bandwidth applications such as interactive video, video-on-demand content and new gaming applications are bandwidth intense and Urban Networks’ broadband service will be deployed in high-speed increments starting at 10Mb/s with a variety of optional upgrades.
